As a renter or home owner, we can all be GREENER.  We can consider three basic categories, energy, water management and storm water management.

Be an advocate for GREENING your community.  Our focus this month is ENERGY.

We all use energy. Celebrate Earth Day 2011, Friday, April 22 and consider what you can do to be GREENER.   Please explore the options and resources below and commit to GREENING your environment.

Energy Efficient Buildings

Energy Action Network

Visit a Chicago Energy Action Network center to apply for utility assistance (LIHEAP) and energy efficiency (IHWAP) programs. Eligibility restrictions apply. Contact the Community and Economic Development Association of Cook County (800) 571-CEDA (2332); Mon-Fri 8a.m.- 6p.m.

Greencorps Chicago's Weatherization Program

Greencorps Chicago’s Weatherization Program performs energy efficiency improvements for low to moderate income households. (312) 746-9777; www.cityofchicago.org.

CNT Energy Savers Program

If you own a multi-family building with five or more units that are affordable to low-income renters, the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) Energy Savers Program provides grants and financing options for energy efficiency improvements. (773) 278-4800; www.cntenergy.org.

Low-Cost Weatherization and Education Program

Learn how to weatherize your home with the Low-Cost Weatherization and Education Program. Attend a workshop and receive a free weatherization kit. www.chicagoconservationcorps.org/blog/eventcalendar.

Chicago Green Office Challenge

The Green Office Challenge helps office managers and building owners in Chicago’s central business district identify ways to save energy, conserve water and minimize waste in the office. www.chicagogreenofficechallenge.org;greenofficechallenge@cityofchicago.org;

MeterSave

Save water and money by participating in MeterSave, a program offered by the Chicago Department of Water Management to Chicago homeowners without water meters to voluntarily install one in their home. Participants receive a 7-year guarantee that their new home water bills will not exceed their previously unmetered bills.
